Some dealers have commented that when removing the nuts securing the steering
column to the instrument panel, the studs may also back out of the magnesium instrument
panel beam. When these studs back out of the instrument panel beam, difficulty may
occur during installation due to the free floating square nuts that secure the stud
to the beam. These free floating nuts are positioned into recesses in the magnesium
beam and can easily become mislocated while attempting to install the studs.
To eliminate this from occurring, the studs should be held in position during
the removal of the steering column attaching nuts. This can be easily performed by
following the procedure below:
- Position a 13 mm crowfoot wrench onto one of the steering column
to instrument panel attaching nuts.

- While holding the stud in position with a number 7 inverted TORX®
 socket, remove the nut.

- Repeat the above steps for the remaining steering column to instrument
 panel attaching nuts.
