J 1859-A Steering Wheel Puller
Removal Procedure
Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing
any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to
the vehicle or its components.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Remove the instrument cluster bezel. Refer to
Instrument Cluster Replacement
.
- Disconnect the electrical connectors.
- Remove the 3 heater control screws. Pull the control rearward.
- Disconnect the electrical connector from the back of the control assembly.
- Remove the 4 radio control screws and the radio. Refer to
Radio Replacement
in
Entertainment.
- Remove the radio mounting bracket and the screw from the instrument panel.
- Remove the instrument cluster. Refer to
Instrument Cluster Replacement
.
- Remove the horn switch pad on the steering wheel. Refer to
Steering Wheel Horn Switch Replacement
in Steering Wheel and Column.
- Disconnect the 2 horn electrical connectors in the center of the steering
wheel. Refer to
Steering Wheel Horn Switch Replacement
in Steering Wheel and Column.
- Remove the steering wheel. Refer to
Steering Wheel Replacement
in Steering
Wheel and Column.
- Remove the 4 steering column filler panel screws and
the filler panel.
- Remove the brake lamp switch from the brake pedal cross
shaft.
- Remove the 2 nuts holding the steering column support to the instrument
panel reinforcement. Refer to
Steering Column Replacement
in Steering Wheel and Column.
- Remove the 3 steering column to floor bolts.
- Lower the steering column and support. Refer to
Steering Column Replacement
in
Steering Wheel and Column.
- Remove the 2 speakers. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the speakers.

- Remove the center trim panel with the following procedure:
| 18.1. | Open the instrument panel compartment door. |
| 18.2. | Pry out the door check straps at the instrument panel, if equipped. |
- Remove the screw at the left side of the compartment door.
- Remove the compartment door.
- Remove the 4 screws retaining the compartment.
- Remove the compartment.
- Open the ash tray compartment. Remove the 2 top
screws and the 2 bottom screws from the ash tray assembly.
- Remove the ashtray light from the ashtray compartment.
- Cut off the wiring harness retainer.
- After lifting the assembly forward, disconnect the wiring from the lighter
and the compartment lamp. Refer to

.
- Remove the fuse block cover.
- Remove the side trim panels from the hinge pillar cowl.
- Remove the 2 mounting bracket to instrument panel screws.
- Remove the 5 instrument panel upper mounting screws below the windshield.
- Pull the top of the instrument panel back towards the seat. Roll the instrument
panel on the mounting brackets.
- For vehicles with air brakes, disconnect the air lines
at the cowl.
- Remove the following components from the back of the instrument panel:
| • | The defroster duct screws and the defroster duct |
| • | The air conditioning duct screws and the duct |
| • | The following components have connectors holding the wiring harnesses
to the instrument panel: |
| - | The screws holding the relay block |
| - | The data link connector |
- Remove the instrument panel from the vehicle.
- Transfer the following components to the new instrument panel:
| 35.1. | The air valve mounting plate, on air brakes only |
Use the following
procedure:
| • | Remove the 3 screws at the bottom of the mounting plate bezel and the
bezel. |
| • | Remove the 4 screws holding the plate. |
| • | Remove the mounting plate and the air brake lines. |

| 35.5. | The instrument cluster shroud screws and the shroud |
| 35.6. | The instrument panel compartment striker |
| 35.7. | The air conditioning duct at the right side of the instrument panel |
| 35.8. | All of the instrument panel mounting clips |
Installation Procedure
- Install the instrument panel to the mounting brackets.
- Install the following items to the back of the instrument panel:
| • | The data link connector |
| • | The hourmeter connector, if equipped |
| • | The air conditioning duct and screws |
| • | The defroster duct and screws |
- Connect the air lines to the cowl, for air brakes only.
Position the instrument panel back into place.
Important: Before installing the screws through the
clips (1) at the cowl (3), center the slider (2) at the back
of each clip on the clip.
- Install the instrument panel and the 5 screws to the cowl.
- Install the 2 mounting bracket to instrument panel screws.
- Install the hinge pillar cowl side trim panels.
- Install the ash tray assembly, with the following procedure:
| 7.2. | Install the ash tray assembly in the instrument panel and the screws. |
| 7.3. | Install the wiring harness retainer. |
| 7.4. | Install the ashtray light from the ashtray compartment. |
| 7.5. | Install the ash tray. |
- Install the instrument panel compartment and the 4 screws.
- Install the compartment door.
- Connect the door check straps to the instrument panel.
- Install the center trim panel.
- Install the 2 radio speakers. Connect the electrical connectors. Refer
to

in Entertainment.
- Install the steering column, and the support to the instrument panel reinforcement
and the nuts. Refer to
Steering Column Replacement
in Steering Wheel and Column.
- Install the 3 steering column to cowl bolts. Refer to
Steering Column Replacement
in
Steering Wheel and Column.
- Install the brake lamp switch to the brake pedal cross
shaft.
- Install the radio and the radio mounting bracket. Refer
to
Radio Replacement
in Entertainment.
- Install the steering column filler panel to the instrument
panel.
- Install the steering wheel with the nut and the retainer. Refer to
Steering Column Replacement
in Steering Wheel and Column.
- Connect the horn switch electrical connectors to the horn pad. Refer to
Steering Wheel Horn Switch Replacement
in Steering Wheel and Column.
- Install the horn pad to the steering wheel. Press the horn pad into place.
- Install the instrument cluster and the screws. Refer to
Instrument Cluster Replacement
.
- Install the control assembly and screws. Connect the wiring at the back
of the control assembly.
- Install the radio control assembly and the screws. Connect the wiring
at the back of the radio control assembly.
- Connect the headlamp switch and the electrical connectors.
- Install the instrument cluster bezel and the screws. Refer to
Instrument Cluster Replacement
.
- Install the fuse block cover.
- Connect the negative battery cable.
