Equalizing Beam Center Bushing Replacement On Vehicle U-340Type
Tools Required

Removal Procedure
- Set the parking brake.
- Block the front wheels.
- Remove the following components:
| • | The saddle cap stud nuts |
- Raise the frame in order to allow access to the center bushing.
Support the frame forward and rearward of the rear axle.
- Remove the equalizing beam from the vehicle. Refer to
Equalizing Beam Replacement
.
- Position the equalizing beam on both axles.
- Install the following components. Do not torque the nuts at this
time.
- Center the bushing (2)
using the J 42114
and
the J 42115
.
Installation Procedure
- Install the new center
bushing (2) using the tools from sets J 42114
and J 42115
.
- Install the following
components from the axles:
- Install the crosstube into the equalizing beam.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Position the equalizing
beam on both axles. Install the following components to the equalizing beam
end bushing.
Tighten
Tighten the equalizer beam bolt nut to 700 N·m (516 lb ft).
- Lower the frame in order to install the saddle cap assembly to
the center bushing.
- Install the following components:
| • | The saddle cap stud washers |
Tighten
Tighten the saddle cap nut to 340 N·m (250 lb ft)
after the axle is in its normal operating position.
- Remove the blocks from the wheels.

Removal Procedure

- Install the following

J 42116 Bushing
Remover and Installer
Removal Procedure
Important: When replacing the center bushing, replace the center bushing of the
opposite equalizing beam.
- Remove the equalizing beam from the vehicle. Refer to
Equalizing Beam Replacement
.
Notice: Under no circumstances is a cutting torch, chisel, or tools that would
damage the bore, to be used in removing the equalizing beam bushings.
Damage by a torch or tools could reduce the strength of the bushing area and
cause damage to the equalizing beam.
- Remove the bushing, using the J 42116
.
- Press out the bushing using a driver or arbor press. Exert force
on the bushing outer sleeve.
Installation Procedure
- Install the new bushing
using the J 42116
.
- Press the bushing into place. Exert force on the bushing outer
sleeve until the outer sleeve extends an equal distance through the beam at
both sides.
- Install the equalizing beam.
- Remove the blocks from the wheels.

Removal Procedure
Important: When replacing the center bushing, replace the center bushing of the
opposite equalizing beam.
- Remove the equalizing beam from the vehicle. Refer to
