Schematic Reference: Power Window Schematics

DEFINITION:This diagnostic procedure should be used to diagnose a total failure of the power window system.

Did you review the Power Window Description and Operation and perform the necessary inspections?

Go to Step 2

  1. Turn the ignition ON, with the engine OFF.
  2. Operate both power windows up and down from both the power window master switch and the individual power window switch.

Do both power windows operate up and down from both switches?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

Go to Step 3

Did either power window operate from either switch?

Go to Power Window Inoperative - Driver Door or Power Window Inoperative - Passenger Door

Go to Step 4

  1. Disconnect the power window master switch.
  2. Turn the ignition ON, with the engine OFF.
  3. Connect a test lamp between the power window master switch battery positive voltage circuit and a good ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 5

Go to Step 6

Connect the test lamp between the power window master switch ground circuit and B+.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 10

  1. Remove the power window relay.
  2. Connect a test lamp between the power window relay battery positive voltage circuit at the convenience center and a good ground.

Did the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 7

  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Connect a test lamp between the power window relay battery ignition 3 voltage circuit at the convenience center and a good ground.

Did the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 8

Connect a test lamp between the power window relay ground circuit and the ignition 3 voltage circuit at the convenience center.

Did the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 9

  1. Connect a fused jumper wire between the power window relay battery positive voltage circuit and the power window switch battery positive voltage circuit.
  2. Operate the power windows from the power window switch.

Do the power windows operate properly?

Go to Step 11

Inspect for poor connections at the power window master switch. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you find and correct the condition?

Repair the open or short to ground in the power window relay battery voltage supply circuit.

Repair the open or short to ground in the power window switch battery voltage supply circuit.

Repair the open in the power window relay ground circuit.
