Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the propeller shaft. Refer to One-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement , Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement , or Three-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  2. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) electrical connector (3), as required.

  4. Use J 3453 (1) in order to hold the propeller shaft yoke, remove the yoke nut, if necessary.
  5. Remove the propeller shaft yoke, as required.

  6. Object Number: 199857  Size: SH
  7. Remove the rear bearing cover nuts (1) or bolts (4), if equipped, and washers (5).
  8. Remove the rear bearing cover.
  9. Remove the rear oil seal.
  10. Clean the rear bearing cover with clean solvent.
  11. Inspect the bearing retainer for damage.

Installation Procedure

    Important: 

       • The seal lip must face toward the transmission.
       • The seal must not be cocked or distorted.

  1. Install a new seal into the housing (1), using J 22834-A . Coat the seal lip with transmission oil.

  2. Object Number: 199857  Size: SH
  3. Install the bearing cover (2). Align the oil passages in the bearing cover and the transmission case.
  4. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the rear bearing cover nuts (1) or bolts (4), if equipped, and washers (5).
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the rear bearing cover bolts/nuts to 33 N·m (24 lb ft).

  7. Install the propeller shaft yoke, if necessary.

  9. Install the propeller shaft yoke nut until snug.
  10. If equipped with a MK8 or MK9 transmission, use J 3453 (1) in order to hold the propeller shaft yoke, tighten the yoke nut.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the propeller shaft yoke nut to 441 N·m (325 lb ft).

  12. If equipped with a M69, MKO, MLO, MM7, MM8, MNC, MPV, MSA, MSG, or MWO transmission, install the flange or yoke nut. Use the J 3453 or J 8614-01 (1) in order to hold the yoke, as required.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the flange nut or yoke nut to 675 N·m(500 lb ft).

  14. If equipped with a MS9, MT3, MUT or MUU transmission, install the flange or yoke nut. Use the J 3453 or J 8614-01 (1) in order to hold the yoke, as required.
  15. Tighten
    Tighten the flange nut or yoke nut to 675 N·m(500 lb ft).

  16. Install the propeller shaft. Refer to One-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement , Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement , or Three-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement in Propeller Shaft.
  17. Connect the VSS electrical connector (3), as required.
