Steering Column Upper Housing Replacement Off Vehicle

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 344004  Size: SH
  1. Remove the steering column lock cylinder set.
  2. Important: For standard columns, proceed to step 10.

  3. Remove the upper bearing inner race seat (1).
  4. Remove the inner race (2).

  5. Object Number: 343832  Size: SH
  6. Remove 3 pan head 6 lobe soc tap screws (1) from the lock housing cover assembly.

  7. Object Number: 354107  Size: SH
  8. Remove the lock housing cover assembly (1).
  9. Remove the column housing cover end cap (2).
  10. Remove the dimmer switch rod actuator (3) from the lock housing cover assembly (1).

  11. Object Number: 343835  Size: SH
  12. Remove the switch actuator pivot pin (2) from the windshield wiper and washer switch assembly (1).
  13. Remove the lock housing cover assembly.

  14. Object Number: 358698  Size: SH
  15. Remove 4 hex washer head screws (3) from the steering column housing assembly (1).
  16. Remove the thrust washer (2) from the steering shaft assembly.
  17. Remove the steering column housing assembly (1).

  18. Object Number: 343835  Size: SH
  19. Remove the switch actuator pivot pin (2) from the windshield wiper and washer switch assembly (1).

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 343861  Size: SH
  1. Lubricate the switch actuator pivot pin (2).
  2. Install the switch actuator pivot pin (2) to the windshield wiper and washer switch assembly (1).

  3. Object Number: 354107  Size: SH

    Important: For standard columns, proceed to step 13.

  4. Align the lock housing cover assembly (1) onto the steering column.
  5. Lubricate the dimmer switch rod actuator (3) with lithium grease.
  6. Install the dimmer switch rod actuator (3) into the lock housing cover assembly (1).
  7. Align the dimmer switch rod actuator (3) with the dimmer switch actuator rod.
  8. Install the column housing cover end cap (2) to the lock housing cover assembly (1).

  9. Object Number: 343832  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  10. Secure the lock housing cover assembly using 3 pan head 6 lobe soc tap screws (1).
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the 3 pan head 6 lobe soc tap screws to 9 N·m (80 lb in).

  12. Lubricate the inner race (2) with lithium grease.
  13. Install the inner race (2) to the steering shaft assembly.
  14. Install the upper bearing inner race seat (1) to the steering shaft assembly.
  15. Install the steering column lock cylinder set.

  16. Object Number: 358698  Size: SH
  17. For standard columns, align the steering column housing assembly (1) onto the steering column.
  18. Align the dimmer switch actuator rod to the steering column housing assembly.
  19. Align the ignition switch actuator assembly to the steering column housing assembly.
  20. Install the steering column housing assembly and secure using 4 hex washer head tapping screws (3).
  21. Tighten
    Tighten the 4 hex washer head tapping screws (3) to 5.5 N·m (48 lb in).

  22. Install the thrust washer (2) onto the steering shaft assembly.
  23. Install the steering column lock cylinder set.
