Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket Replacement Off Vehicle - Tilt Column

Tools Required

J 41688 Tilt Centering Sphere Installer

1. Remove the steering column housing assembly. Refer to Steering Column Jacket Replacement .
2. Remove the ignition switch and the dimmer switch assembly only. Refer to Ignition and Start Switch Replacement .
3. Remove the lower bearing adapter clip (1) from the steering column jacket assembly.
4. Remove the bearing adapter retainer (2) from the steering column jacket assembly (4).
5. Remove the lower bearing adapter (3) from the steering column jacket assembly (4).



6. Remove the steering shaft assembly.




Important: Mark the race and upper shaft assembly and the lower steering shaft assembly to ensure proper assembly. Failure to assemble properly will cause the steering wheel to be turned  180 degrees.

7. Mark the race and upper shaft assembly and the lower steering shaft assembly.
8. Tilt the race and upper shaft assembly (1) 90 degrees to the lower steering shaft assembly (2) to disengage.



9. Insert the race and upper shaft assembly (1) into J 41688 .
10. Rotate the race and upper shaft assembly (1)  90 degrees to disengage.
11. Turn J 41688 to disengage the sphere, if needed.



12. Remove the 4 hexagon washer head tapping screws (1).
13. Remove the steering column housing support assembly (3) with the dimmer switch rod (2) still connected.
14. Remove the lock plate.

Remove the shroud bowl.

1. Install the lock plate.

Install the shroud bowl.

2. Install the steering column housing support assembly (3) with the dimmer switch rod (2) connected.



3. Lubricate the inside of the centering sphere with lithium grease.
4. Install the centering sphere (1) and the joint preload spring (2) into J 41688 .



5. Compress the centering sphere and the joint preload spring in J 41688 .

Rotate the driver of J 41688  90 degrees in the clockwise direction until the arms lock in place.




6. Install the race and upper shaft assembly (1).

Rotate the race and upper shaft assembly (1)  90 degrees.




7. Remove the race and upper shaft assembly with J 41688 .
8. Remove the race and upper shaft assembly with the centering sphere from J 41688 .



9. Apply lithium grease to the race and upper shaft assembly.
10. Align the marks on the race and upper shaft assembly with the marks on the lower steering shaft assembly.
11. Install the lower steering shaft assembly to the race and upper shaft assembly to engage.



12. Install the steering shaft assembly into the steering column jacket assembly.



13. Lubricate the inside of the lower bearing adapter (3).
14. Install the lower bearing adapter (3) to the steering column jacket assembly (4).
15. Install the bearing adapter retainer (2).
16. Install the lower bearing adapter clip (1).
17. Install the ignition switch and the dimmer switch assembly only. Refer to Ignition and Start Switch Replacement .
18. Install the steering column housing assembly. Refer to Steering Column Jacket Replacement .

Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket Replacement Off Vehicle - Standard Floor Shift

Tools Required

1. Remove the windshield wiper and washer switch assembly. Refer to Windshield Wiper and Washer Switch Replacement in Wipers/Washer Systems.
2. Remove the lower bearing adapter clip (1) from the steering column jacket assembly.
3. Remove the bearing adapter retainer (2) from the steering column jacket assembly (4).
4. Remove the lower bearing adapter (3) from the steering column jacket assembly (4).



5. Remove the bearing retainer (1) using J 23653-SIR and J 23653-91 .



6. Remove the steering shaft assembly from the steering column jacket assembly.
7. Check the steering column for accident damage. Refer to Steering Column Accident Damage Inspection .

1. Install the steering shaft assembly into the steering column jacket assembly.



2. Install the bearing retainer (1) using J 23653-SIR and J 23653-91 .
3. Install the windshield wiper and washer switch assembly. Refer to Windshield Wiper and Washer Switch Replacement in Wipers/Washer Systems.



4. Lubricate the inside of the lower bearing adapter (3).
5. Install the lower bearing adapter (3) to the steering column jacket assembly (4).
6. Install the bearing adapter retainer (2).
7. Install the lower bearing adapter clip (1).

Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket Replacement Off Vehicle - Standard Column Shift

Tools Required

1. Remove the windshield wiper and washer switch assembly. Refer to Windshield Wiper and Washer Switch Replacement in Wipers/Washer Systems.
2. Remove the lower bearing adapter clip (1) from the steering column jacket assembly.
3. Remove the bearing adapter retainer (2) from the steering column jacket assembly (4).
4. Remove the lower bearing adapter (3) from the steering column jacket assembly (4).



5. Remove the bearing retainer (1) using J 23653-SIR and J 23653-91 .



6. Remove the steering shaft assembly from the steering column jacket assembly.
7. Check the steering column for accident damage. Refer to Steering Column Accident Damage Inspection .



8. Remove the shift tube retaining ring (2).
9. Dispose of the shift tube retaining ring (2).
10. Remove the thrust washer (1).




Important: The shift tube lever must be in position to clear the steering column jacket assembly for removal and installation.

11. Align the shift tube (1) to the steering column jacket assembly (2).



12. Remove the shift tube (1) from the gearshift lever bowl assembly (2) using J 23072 .



13. Remove the lock plate (1) from the gearshift lever bowl assembly (4).
14. Remove the wave washer (2).
15. Remove the gearshift lever bowl (4) assembly from the steering column jacket assembly (6).
16. Remove the gearshift bowl shroud (5) from the gearshift lever bowl assembly (4).
17. Remove the shift lever spring (3).

1. Install the gearshift bowl shroud (5) to the gearshift lever bowl assembly (4).
2. Lubricate the shift lever spring (3) with lithium grease.
3. Install the shift lever spring (3).
4. Lubricate the wave washer (2) with lithium grease.
5. Install the wave washer (2).
6. Install the lock plate (1) into the gearshift lever bowl assembly (4).
7. Install the gearshift lever bowl assembly (4) to the steering column jacket assembly (6).



8. Insert the shift tube assembly (1) through the bottom of the steering column jacket assembly (2).
9. Line up the keyway from the shift tube assembly (1) with the keyway on the gearshift lever bowl assembly.
10. Apply just enough pressure to extend the shift tube assembly (1) past the lock plate.



11. Slide the thrust washer (1) onto the shift tube assembly.
12. Slide the shift tube retaining ring (2) onto the shift tube assembly.
13. Use the J 23073-01 to seat the gearshift lever bowl assembly and the shift tube retaining ring (2).



14. Install the steering shaft assembly into the steering column jacket assembly.



15. Install the bearing retainer (1) using J 23653-SIR and J 23653-91 .
16. Install the windshield wiper and washer switch assembly. Refer to Windshield Wiper and Washer Switch Replacement in Wipers/Washer Systems.



17. Lubricate the inside of the lower bearing adapter (3).
18. Install the lower bearing adapter (3) to the steering column jacket assembly (4).
19. Install the bearing adapter retainer (2).
20. Install the lower bearing adapter clip (1).
